THERE’S A LOT MORE RIDING ON METRO THAN PEOPLE.
Since 1963, billions of dollars have directly and indirectly been invested in our communities as the result of the services Metro Transit has long provided. But what’s riding on our system at any given moment remains even more valuable — the hopes and dreams of everyone who count on us. That’s why we’re so excited about making the biggest security upgrade in our history.

Combining best in class security practices, environmental design modifications and state-of-the-art security technology across all 38 MetroLink stations, this end-to-end solution will “roll out” one multi-station group at a time, with seven multi-station “packages” total. In fact, work is already underway on the plan’s first package, located in St. Clair County, IL.
From Richmond Heights to Fairview Heights, the strengthened partnership between our Metro Transit security teams and community law enforcement personnel will serve as the bedrock of this $52-million multi-faceted safety initiative – augmented even more by some of the latest advances in transit security technology.
Over 1,800 cameras linked to our continuously staffed Real Time Camera Center, for improved detection and response capabilities.
Multi-community law enforcement task force with expanded access to local, state and regional agencies to support emergency preparedness initatives, safety and security.
Seamless connectivity between closed circuit surveillance technology throughout the system, shared across multiple law enforcement agencies on both sides of the river.
ADA accessible full-height secure gating integrated with both electronic and paper ticket customer boarding options. Sight-optimized precision-welded fencing. Updated, streamlined lighting, signage and wayfinding.
Soon you’ll be able to have the option of boarding the MetroLink the same way you pay for fast food or a coffee drink – expediting your entire transit experience.
Whether it’s collaboration between community law enforcement agencies, regional leaders and other government officials or the combined efforts of civic organizations in concert with corporations from the private sector, this historic Metro Transit initiative will immediately enhance the customer transit experience in every community we serve.
What’s more, the completion of this project also immediately impacts our entire region on a long-term basis, attracting the kind of economic growth that benefits all of 2.8 million of us.
